Capturing eddy shedding in the Gulf of Mexico from Lagrangian observations

چکیده
The nonlinear process of eddy shedding is studied in the context of the Gulf of Mexico. We show that model runs which do not include eddy detachment can reproduce such an event with the assimilation of suitable data obtained from a control run with eddy detachment. This works surprisingly well and with small amounts of data provided the data originates from instruments that are carried by the flow, i.e. Lagrangian. This is compared with analogous assimilation of data from fixed stations which capture the eddy poorly. The remarkable efficacy of Lagrangian data assimilation in this context is explained by considering the structure of the correlation functions and their associated regions of influence. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Vorticity flux through the Yucatan Channel and Loop Current variability in the Gulf of Mexico
[1] Recent observations (the CANEK Program [Candela et al., 2002]) suggest that potential vorticity (PV) flux anomaly (VFA) at Yucatan Channel may serve as a useful indicator of Loop Current variability, including Loop Current extension, retraction, and eddy shedding. Intuitively, anticyclonic VFA extends the Loop Current into the Gulf of Mexico and cyclonic VFA causes retraction or even sheddi...
متن کاملEnsemble Optimal Interpolation: multivariate properties in the Gulf of Mexico
High-resolution models can reproduce mesoscale dynamics and the variability in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), but cannot provide accurate locations of currents without data assimilation (DA). We use the computationally cheap Ensemble Optimal Interpolation (EnOI) in conjunction with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) model for assimilating altimetry data. The covariance matrix extracted from a...
متن کاملLagrangian velocity statistics of directed launch strategies in a Gulf of Mexico model
The spatial dependence of Lagrangian displacement and velocity statistics is studied in the context of a data assimilating numerical model of the Gulf Mexico. In the active eddy region of the Western Gulf, a combination of Eulerian and Lagrangian measures are used to locate strongly hyperbolic regions of the flow. The statistics of the velocity field sampled by sets of drifters launched specifi...
متن کاملPathways for advective transport
Advective transport in the ocean fundamentally is Lagrangian in nature. At model grid scales, this transport is parameterized by eddy or turbulent exchange coefficients in analogy to molecular diffusion. Nevertheless, much of the transport is by advection on scales larger than the grid cell yet smaller than basin scale. Moreover, flow at these scales tends to be nonstationary in time and irregu...
متن کاملDiet and trophic level of scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico
We examined the diet and trophic level of Sphyrna lewini in the Gulf of California (GC) during 2001 and in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT) during 2005 using data from stomach content and stable isotope analysis of δ15N and δ13C. S. lewini diet was represented by pelagic and benthic prey species where the most important in weight was Scomber japonicus (27.70±4.54%) in GC, while in GT it was Auxis s...
